DPS schedules 3rd detonation operation for June 25

DPS spokesman Eric F. David said the road to Marpi will be closed to tour and dive operators, farmers, joggers, bikers and the general public from 12 noon to 4:30 p.m.

The detonation operation at the Laderan Laggun Cliff Line will be conducted jointly by DPS, the Emergency Management Office and the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment Marianas.

David said the only area that will remain open is the Suicide Cliff road which will be the main viewing point for the detonation.

“Public access to Suicide Cliff is allowed only through the road leading up to the Far East Broadcasting antenna for viewing purposes, and DPS will set security posts to enforce and control traffic movement for safety purposes,” David said.

On April 24, the joint teams detonated over 1,000 lbs. of live World War 11 ordnance at the Laderan Laggun Cliff Line, the biggest volume for the past five years, consisting of U.S. military artillery, projectiles, hand grenades and mortar rounds.

Another 1,000 lbs. of  ordnance were detonated in the second detonation operation on May 29.

Most of the ordnance was unearthed from the Marpi homestead project since March 1, 2009.

DPS earlier said more detonation operations were expected in the future as there could be more than 10,000 pieces of World War II ordnance still waiting to be unearthed.
