Acting Bureau of Immigration Director Joe Giramur said that the 11 nationals arrived on Palau Feb. 28 as tourists but later changed their status as refugees.
Giramur also stated that a representative from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) will again arrive in Palau to decide on the Burmese’s application for asylum.Earlier Giramur said that the nationals wanted to use Palau as transit point to another country but then they also intend to seek asylum in Palau.Giramur said a UNCHR representative visited Palau to evaluate the status of the nationals.Giramur said the nationals are here under special permits.
