The GAO, which is the investigative arm of the U.S. Congress, is conducting a study on the impact of past minimum wage increases in the CNMI on employment rates and living standards of workers, and the impact of future minimum wage increases on employment rates and living standards of workers.
This study is mandated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The GAO provided a brief summary of the minimum wage study and outlined its methodology.
The chamber impressed upon the GAO the need to consider the “outer-island” economies when studying the minimum wages increases and the need to assess the prevailing wage rates for the CNMI.
