Influenza A(H1N1) updates: Who declares Phase 6

At this time, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the overall severity of the pandemic to be moderate.  Most people recover from H1N1 infections without the need for hospitalization as the severity of illnesses appear to be similar to the regular seasonal influenza.  Most health care systems have been able to cope with the number of people seeking care.  However, some areas have reported high levels of disease and strain on their health care systems.  WHO cautions that the severity of pandemics can change over time and be different by location and population.  Close monitoring and reporting of the disease is therefore critical in order to evaluate possible changes in the severity or any other characteristics of this new virus.

Currently, there are almost 30,000 confirmed cases of Influenza A(H1N1) infections, reported in 74 countries around the world (http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html).  Although there have been no laboratory confirmed cases in Palau, Ministry of Health reports over 70 cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI), including 1 suspect case of Influenza A(H1N1); samples have been sent off-island for laboratory confirmation.  Ministry of Health continues to urge everyone in the community to take everyday actions to stay healthy and prevent the possible spread of influenza, including regular hand washing, proper coughing/sneezing etiquettes, avoiding sick persons, and especially to call the 24-hotline (488-0555) if experiencing  flu-like symptoms (cough, sore throat, runny nose, fever).Response activities continue at this time to secure measures for rapid detection, containment, and to ensure appropriate care of sick people.  Please forward all questions on Influenza A(H1N1) to the 24-Hour Hotline at 488-0555, or the Ministry of Health Emergency Operations Center at 488-0675 during working hours.
