Around the Islands: WSR advisory

• The school library will be open daily beginning on July 20 through Aug. 21 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students are encouraged to visit the WSR Elementary School library.

• Student registrations for school year 2009-2010 are still being accepted. All ongoing students need to register for the upcoming school year.

If you haven’t registered your children, come by the office to pick up a form.

The school will not be registering students during the first week of school, so any student not registered before the beginning of the school year will not be able to attend the first week of school.

If your child will be transferring to another school, a withdrawal form must be filled out at the office.

• Students uniforms are still on sale at the office. Polo shirts, boys’ cargo shorts and pants, girls’ capris and skorts are all for sale at $10 a piece until supplies last. Visit the school office to make your purchase today.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above information, you may contact the school at 237-3542 or Mrs. Villagomez at 483-9106.

BankPacific turns 55

(BankPacific) — It was on a Wednesday, July 7, 1954 when future Gov. Joseph Flores opened the doors of Guam’s First Bank, Guam Savings and Loan Association, now known as BankPacific.

The bank’s first customer was then-Gov. Carlton Skinner.

The first office was located in Hagåtña where the DNA building now sits.

The members of first the board of directors included Flores, “Jake” Calvo, Frank D. Perez, Joaquin Guerrero and Felix Camacho.

Yesterday, BankPacific celebrated its 55th anniversary, an achievement accomplished by few companies and in today’s world, even fewer banks.

“On behalf of our family at BankPacific, thank you for allowing us to serve our communities,” said Philip Flores, BankPacific president.

“And while we look forward to our next 55 years with excited anticipation, we have an especially keen eye on the next 10 years and helping individuals, families and companies keep up with and enjoy the growth we will soon see in Guam, the CNMI, Palau and the rest of our region.  We’re committed as only a neighbor could be.”
