Acting DPS spokesman Jason T. Tarkong said they are still waiting for the approval of the Attorney General’s Office before putting the profiles of registered sex offenders on the Web site.
He said they need to iron out all the details first and see to it that “all t’s are crossed and all i’s are dotted” before finally uploading the files online.
During the launching of the DPS Web site last year, then-Commissioner Clyde K. Norita said uploading the profiles and the photographs of registered sex offenders on the Web site could help the community identify the sex offenders living in their area.
Sex offenders are persons who were convicted of criminal offenses against victims who are minors, are convicted of sexually violent offenses, sexual offenses, and other charges.
There are over a hundred registered sex offenders in the CNMI and these individuals are required to update their records like fingerprints, photographs and other vital information regularly. This information should be posted in conspicuous places.
DPS said under the law, any sex offender who fails to update his records commits a federal offense punishable up to 10 years in prison.
DPS said updating the registry of the sex offenders is important because sex offenders can easily change addresses, contact numbers, vehicles and employment status.
