Tinian writers workshop set for August
ARE you a high school student on Tinian wishing to improve your writing skills?
If so, the NMI Council for the Humanities invites you to attend the upcoming Tinian Young Writers Summer Workshop.
The workshop will be held at the Tinian High School Library on four consecutive Saturdays starting on 8 August. Each session will run between two and four hours.
The workshop will be facilitated by veteran creative writing instructor Stephen Smith who is the Language Arts Program Coordinator at the CNMI Public School System.
Smith will introduce participants to the fundamentals of fiction writing including basic outlining, developing characters and storyboarding.
Each participant will select a Tinian-based theme and genre for their original piece of creative writing. Writers will then prepare a series of drafts during which they will receive critical feedback and guidance from Smith.
The final product will be a series of original works of creative fiction that the Council will publish for distribution in the CNMI.
The deadline for registration is 7 August 2009. Workshop seating is limited to 20 and reservations will be confirmed on a first come, first served basis.
Workshop registration forms may be obtained from Council Board member Janet H. King on Tinian or downloaded from the Council’s website at www.nmihumanites.org.
The workshop is a part of the Council’s continuing efforts to foster literacy skills in the Commonwealth.
For more information about this workshop please contact Council staff at 235-4785 or Janet King ([email protected]) at 433-0419.
Red flag raised in 1 site
(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag at one site in Saipan’s east and south recreational beach and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
Samples collected from Unai Dangkulo contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.
