Maritime Heritage Trail Project needs more volunteers

Jennifer McKinnon, project manager, said they welcome anyone interested to help them.

She said there are a few people who registered and had undergone three days of training but the Historic Preservation Office is looking forward to more participants.

“There will be six months of training, late this year or early next year, for those who will register as volunteers,” McKinnon stated.

The training aims to help the people of the CNMI become active stewards in the preservation of local maritime heritage, Department of Historic Preservation said in a statement.

The Development of Maritime Heritage Trail supports the identification and documentation of selected submerged remains associated with the Battle of Saipan.

It aims to increase the profile and awareness of submerged WWII heritage and support preservation by both government agencies and the public.

The U.S. National Park Service is funding the project.

It is made possible by Ships of Discovery, a non-profit archaeology organization who was awarded the American Battlefield Protection Program Grant.
