More earmarks approved for NMI projects

“I am very pleased that we continue to have success getting my Member requests funded,” said Congressman Sablan. “The Joeten-Kiyu Library is a much-used and very important public asset on Saipan. And the Garapan Public Market will play an important role in the continuing development of our tourism industry, as well as for local farmers and fishers.”

The Joeten-Kiyu Library has been troubled for several years by leaks in its roof that threaten the Library¹s holdings of books and videos and its computers and audio-visual equipment. Sablan included the $200,000 funding among his Member requests because of this imminent danger.

“One of my other Member requests that has been funded in a House appropriations bill is $100,000 for library books for the Public School System. New books and protecting the books we already have are critical to the continuing education of our children and all of us who live in the Northern Mariana Islands.”

The Garapan Public Market will provide the community a centralized facility that will increase economic opportunity for farmers and fishers and be an additional attraction for tourists who visit the Northern Mariana Islands.

Although the $200,000 earmark is not the full cost of the Market, it is a step toward full funding.

The 2010 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development bill now goes to the Senate for approval.
