Gbewonyo finished second in the recent North Pacific Qualifying Tennis Tournament in Guam in the 18 under girls division.
Flying to Fiji with Gbewonyo are junior netters from CNMI who made in to the top three. Players from CNMI, Palau, Guam, and FSM competed in Guam for the much coveted slot in the tournament in Fiji.After finishing last in last year’s NPQ in Guam, Gbewonyo improved her game to take the second place.“It feels good, I was surprised on how I did and what was the outcome. I was determined this eyar to play very well and win,“ she said.She added, “I thought about my game more and I was more confident than last year.”She said that she will represent Palau in the best way she can.Ernestine Rengiil, the junior players coach said that Gbewonyo will be needing assistance to get to Fiji.Rengiil with assistant coach Noel Reyes have been training five kids who competed in the NPQ in Guam.The Palauan young netters who competed in Guam along with Gbewonyo were Ayana Rengiil, Kaito Fuji, Maricar Otto and Spis Senior. The tournament is annual event that is a gathering of young athletes in the Pacific ages 8 to 18.She said the five were selected for their dedication in learning the sports.She is also encouraging the community to help Gbewonyo in her tournament in Fiji.She lauded Gbewonyo for improving her game in the Guam tournament.
