Arena operator wants stiffer penalty vs illegal cockfights

Maryann D. Calvo, who was just awarded the contract to run the only government-authorized cockfight arena on Saipan for another year, is asking the Saipan Cockfight Board to increase the penalty against those arrested for engaging in illegal cockfights.

Under current law,  a nonresident will be subjected to deportation if found to be directly involved in illegal cockfights.

Aside from deportation, Calvo wants the board to impose a $5,000 fine for the first offense on  nonresidents and locals found violating the law.

“They should amend the law and strictly implement it,” Calvo said, as she expressed dismay over the board’s inaction.

Calvo is also asking Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela to completely revamp the board, which she described as “unfair.”

The mayor should appoint those who are knowledgeable about cockfight rules and regulations, she said.

She said it is “unethical” for board members to continue performing their duties while participating in the games.

“How can they make a fair judgment when they are directly involved in the game?” she asked.

Pete Castro, a board member, has been critical of Calvo’s management.

Calvo believes that the “smear campaign” against her was launched to ensure that illegal cockfights will continue.

She said they are planning to transfer the cockfight arena from Gualo Rao to their own lot in As Gonno to reduce their expenses.
