THE Lucky Leprechauns topped the NMI Volleyball Association’s “For the Luck of Volleyball” tournament on Saturday at the Crowne Plaza beach.
Tyce Mister and Chris Nelson are the Lucky Leprechauns and, from start to finish, they had luck — and volleyball skills — on their side as they blew through the double-elimination tournament with ease.
In the finale, the duo faced the Volley Bros’ Marc Danga and Steven Hong.
Mister and Nelson covered a lot of ground and communicated well as they establish an early five-point lead.
The Volley Bros committed errors but were relentless. Danga played the role of the aggressor, sticking close to the net for constant blocks and powerful spike finishes while Hong supported with the setups while making a few highlights of his own in hopes of closing the gap.
But the Volley Bros failed to stay consistent offensively and defensively. The Lucky Leprechauns, for their part, continued to deliver on all ends of the sandy court. Using the three-touch strategy, the duo eventually gained a comfortable distance en route to victory, 21-13.
The Volley Bros also lost to the Lucky Leprechauns in the semifinal round, 13-21.
In the losers bracket, the Volley Bros defeated Baconator, 21-11, to set up a rematch with the Lucky Leprechauns in the finals.
In the preliminary rounds, the Volley Bros defeated Z4L, 21-11; Chupapi, 21-15; and LIC, 21-18.
As for the Lucky Leprechauns, they swept away The Wind, 21-9, and suffocated Need Air, 21-13, before dispatching the Volley Bros twice.
A total of 15 teams vied for the title.
