Local artists urged to join cultural heritage exhibit

Event coordinator Parker Yobei said that the the exhibit will formally open at 9 a.m. on Sept. 21 at the art gallery on Capital Hill.

He said as of yesterday, some artists had already brought their work to the Arts Council office.

“We are encouraging our artists and art collectors to bring their items for exhibit, or call us if they have no time to do so because we will pick up the artwork from their homes,” Yobei said.

The deadline for submission of artwork either for sale or for exhibit is on Sept. 18.

“The exhibit is one way to promote the talents and skills of our local artists, to preserve our culture and to create a link between the artists and buyers,” Yobei said.

Like the other art exhibits they hold each year, all the proceeds from the artwork sold will be given back to the artists.

“The Arts Council does not get anything out of the sales. We just would like to help our local artists,” he said.

They would have liked to hold the exhibit in a more convenient place like Garapan, which is more accessible to tourists, but making the arrangements were not that easy, Yobei said.

“But we will work with whatever we have and hope for a better outcome in sales compared to the previous years.”

The exhibit, which will include paintings, photographs, locally made handicrafts and products, and other works of art, will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday to Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday.

The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays.

Yobei said the Arts Council is hoping to hold the year’s final exhibit for Christmas crafts in a location more accessible to the public.
