Around the Islands: Educational program for parents separating or divorcing

The session is conducted by Linda Graf, national certified counselor, certified professional mediator, licensed clinical professional counselor, and certified rehabilitation counselor; and Family Court Judge Kenneth L. Govendo.

The parent education sessions covers the following objectives based on the Family Court Division’s Parent Education Curriculum:

1. Provide a summary of the CNMI laws regarding custody and what the Family Court expects from the parents;

2. Provide information about how divorce affects children, their reactions and how parents can help their children cope with these emotional issues;

3. Provide information about the grieving process during divorce for both parents and children;

4. Help parents understand that children adjust to the separation/divorce based on how their parents cope with the challenges of divorce;

5. Educate parents on the impact of divorce based on the ages and stages of their children;

6. Educate couples on coping skills and understanding the need for a business like relationship with their ex-partner as they will always be mother and father to their children and it is their responsibility to help their children find acceptance and healthy adjustment to the change in the family;

7. Help parents understand that how their children experience the divorce will affect their well being for the rest of their lives; and

8. Help parents understand that children are not divorceable.

Those interested in personally attending the session should contact the Family Court Division to register for the next available scheduled session.
