2nd swine flu death on Guam

DPHSS Director J. Peter Roberto said he could not release any additional information because the family of the deceased had not been notified of the test results.

He did add that the deceased suffered from a severe preexisting health condition.

The results came after the agency sent 13 samples off-island for testing.

Of the 13, six samples returned positive for swine flu including the sample from the patient who had passed away.

Vanisse Taliman, 26, of Yigo, was considered Guam’s first flu-related fatality, although her husband disputed the cause of death.

As of last month, the island’s total number of swine flu cases rose to 165 but the department has since stopped publicly reporting individual H1N1 cases.

DPHSS said because the swine flu virus is considered to be widespread throughout the island community, only hospitalized individuals are tested for the virus.

Roberto said once the department has come up with a new way to report cases based on the Centers for Disease Control guidelines, DPHSS will resume reporting swine flu totals.

Roberto also said that Guam is set to receive nearly 9,000 swine flu vaccinations by mid to late October.

He added that the number might increase depending on availability, and that October’s shipment is only the first in several planned vaccine arrivals.
