Eagle Construction, Bluehaus triumph in basketball tourney

EAGLE Construction and Bluehaus came out victorious against their opponents in the masters division of the Saipan Centennial Lions Club Basketball League Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex.

But Eagle Construction had their work cut out for them as they barely survived their match against MDC.

In the opening quarter, Eagle Construction had the advantage in numbers as MDC only had six players at their disposal.

Eagle Construction’s Ocampo delivered nine points as his team seized a double-digit lead, 30-13.

In the second quarter, MDC  staged a huge comeback led by Catalla who drained three buckets from beyond the arc while Sedillo, Dela Torre and Tolentino attacked the rim to reduce the deficit.

MDC continued to put up a fight as Catalla remained hot in the third quarter, sinking three more triples.

But Eagle Construction held on to the lead, 67-64, thanks to the consistency of Ocampo and Sampang.

In the final quarter, both teams went in with guns blazing. MDC’s Tolentino suddenly found his range as he connected four three-pointers while Sedillo and Calbone contributed eight and six points.

Fortunately for Eagle Construction, their well-balanced teamwork was enough to keep them afloat as Sampang, Umali and Alegre stepped up during crunch time to lead their team to victory, 97-93.

Bluehaus vs Magalahi Eagles

The second victory of the day was claimed by Bluehaus thanks to the long-range precision of John Santos who drained a total of 11 three-pointers to  bring down the Magalahi Eagles 93-84.

It was a fairly even match in the first quarter with the Eagles eventually taking control. Odicta fired from all cylinders as he carried his team with 11 points — including three triples — for a 21-17 spread.

In the second canto, Bluehaus returned fire as John Santos started to heat up with three triples of his own while Diaz and Elchico attacked from inside the paint as their team snatched control, 38-37.

For their part, the Eagles gradually worked their way back as Cortez and Aniciete joined Odicta for a combined 17 points to again give their team the lead, 58-57.

Both teams excelled offensively in the final quarter with Odicta and Cortez remaining the Eagles’ biggest threat as they continued to deliver from all around.

But it was Bluehaus’ John Santos who denied the Eagles the win as he could not be stopped from the three-point line. The elite shooter took over the show with six shots from beyond the arc to secure the win for Bluehaus, 93-84.
