Senate confirms Babauta to NMHC board, Peter as new public auditor

THE Senate on Friday confirmed the nominations of former Speaker Oscar M. Babauta to the Northern Marianas Housing Corp. board of directors, and Kina B. Peter as the CNMI’s first female public auditor.

All eight senators present voted to adopt the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigation committee report recommending the confirmation of Babauta and Peter.

Sen. Frank Borja of Tinian was excused.

With their families and friends, Babauta and Peter attended the session, which was the 21st Senate’s last.

John Oliver Gonzales expressed support for his niece, Kina Peter, saying that she “exemplifies a humble daughter of the Marianas and she continues to be [one].”

Gonzales said Peter is level-headed and steadfast.

Matua Council for Chamorro Advancement president Liana S. Hofschneider congratulated Babauta and Peter on their appointments and expressed her support for their confirmation.

EAGI Committee Chairman Frank Q. Cruz said based on the assessment of the nominees’ credentials and the testimonies, his committee is convinced that Babauta and Peter have the qualifications and leadership skills necessary to serve as board member and public auditor respectively.
