Judge finds probable cause to charge man who shot SUV

FOLLOWING a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Superior Court Associate Judge Wesley Bogdan found probable cause to charge Bradley Derick Hocog with assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful discharge of a firearm, unlawful transport of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in a gun-free zone.

The judge ordered the defendant to return to court for an arraignment on Jan. 24 at 9 a.m.

Hocog, 30, was then remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

At the hearing, Hocog was represented by Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock while chief prosecutor Chester Hinds and Assistant Attorney General Carmen Borja appeared for the government.

Judge Bogdan previously imposed a $100,000 cash bail on the defendant who, on Jan. 11, 2022, was arrested by the police after shooting a moving vehicle with his handgun, a registered firearm.

In a freely given statement to the police, Hocog said that prior to the incident, his girlfriend was driving their vehicle and their daughter was in the backseat with the windows rolled down. He said he was in the front passenger seat.

He said he heard and thought there was an object thrown at their vehicle. When he turned to look back, he saw that his daughter was wet and crying.

Hocog said he pulled out his firearm, a Canik TF9Sfx 9mm, and fired one shot toward an SUV operated by the boyfriend of a woman whose mother is Hocog’s former girlfriend.

The former girlfriend’s daughter said she was recording Hocog using her cell phone and was seen by his current girlfriend and by the defendant himself.

She said she heard a loud noise, then she felt something hit their SUV.

The victim told police that she thought Hocog threw a rock so she took her drink and threw it out the window in an attempt to hit Hocog’s vehicle.

She said she also told her boyfriend to follow Hocog’s vehicle as she called the police.
