SENATOR Frank Q. Cruz has pre-filed Senate Resolution 22-15 commending Department of Public Safety’s Assistant Chief of Police Anthony Iglecias Macaranas for serving as a law enforcement officer with courage and gallantry, and for his patriotic service and sacrifice.
Today, Monday, Jan. 31, is Macaranas’s last day with DPS. He is retiring after serving the Commonwealth for almost 36 years.
A graduate of Marianas High School, he was hired as a police recruit in Sept. 1986, joining the 6th Cycle Police Training Academy at Northern Marianas College.
He is the first, and probably the only police officer who pulled over a governor, and gave him a ticket for overspeeding.
Several members of the community applauded Macaranas for his many years of service. Delbert Pua who, on behalf of the 21st Cycle and as its class commander, said, “We thank you for your 35 years of service Col. Anthony Macaranas. We salute you and wish you the best of luck in your next endeavors.”
Macaranas was a police officer 1 from July 1987 to April 1989, police officer 2 from April 1989 to May 1991, police officer 3 from May 1991 to February 2003, police sergeant from February 2003 to June 2016, police lieutenant from June 2016 to October 2017, and police captain from October 2017 to January 2021. At the time of his retirement, he was the assistant chief of police.
He was also assigned to various duties in the then-Division of Corrections from 1986 to 1987, the DPS Police Academy in 1987, the Patrol Section from 1987 to 1989, the Traffic Section from 1989 to 1998, the Patrol Section from 1998 to 2000, the Highway Patrol Section from 2000 to 2007, the Explosive Response Team/Special Enforcement Action Section from 2007 to 2013, and the Highway Patrol Section from 2013 to 2022.
Macaranas likewise served with the Echo Company, 100th Battalion, 442nd 15 Infantry and attended the U.S. Army Infantryman School in Fort Benning, Georgia in October 1999 to March 2000.
“He further committed unrelenting sacrifice to the nation when deployed to Iraq in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom III from August of 2004 through January of 2006,” the Senate resolution stated.
Cruz, a former police officer on Tinian, said the Senate will adopt S.R. 22-15 as soon as they convene and will immediately schedule a presentation of the resolution to Macaranas.
