Chalan Kiya sewer project to be completed by end of February: CUC

THE W-6 Sewer Lift Station Elimination project in Chalan Kiya should be completed by the end of February, Commonwealth Utilities Corporation Executive Director Gary Camacho said.

In May 2021, CUC said the project would be completed by Oct. 2021.

Asked what was the cause of the delay, Camacho said, “The project was coming to an end, but during a CUC water/wastewater engineering final inspection there [were] some deficiencies that the contractor was required to correct.”

He added, “The system correction of deficiencies will be finished on Feb. 17, 2022, and road paving should be completed by end of February.”

The project started on March 26, 2020 with an original contract completion date of Dec. 30, 2020.

The project was then extended to October 2021 due to delays involving “permitting agencies, proximity to an existing underground power cable, proximity to an existing sewer line, water line, and other utilities (Docomo and IT&E), as well as unknown underground utilities, hard rock and loose subsurface conditions, proximity to a wetland, excavation 6 to 13 feet below the groundwater level, and proximity to traffic which limits the maneuverability of heavy equipment at the job site.”

According to CUC, the project involves “the installation of 1,240 linear feet of 10-inch gravity sewer main, 15 to 20 feet below existing grade, a new sewer manhole, new service laterals, connection to existing laterals, the abandonment of existing sewer manholes on the road, and the elimination of the old W-5 wet well and the W-6 Sewer Lift Station.”

“We appreciate everybody’s patience,” Camacho said. “We know it creates a traffic congestion in the area; however, the traffic control direction and devices are public safety requirements…. They help  ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians including the contractor’s employees.”

The W-6 Sewer Lift Station Elimination project cost totaled  $1.26 million and its contractor is RNV Construction.

Camacho praised the project manager, CUC water and wastewater department engineer Nicolette Villagomez, for “a wonderful job, considering the different challenges along the way — we are very proud of her.”

Camacho also thanked RNV Construction for making the necessary adjustments.
