THE 18th Youth Congress unanimously adopted Y.C. Resolution 18-4 requesting the Department of Public Works, the Department of Public Lands and the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to provide adequate lighting at recreational facilities in the villages.
Voting yes to the adopt the resolution were Youth Congress Speaker Cielo Citlali G. Long, Youth Sens. Liekeila’akata Iakopo, YuriHana DLG Sasamoto, Abriette T. Manglona and Easton Joel Dela Cruz.
Authored by Dela Cruz and co-sponsored by the rest of the Youth Congress, the resolution states that proper adequate lighting at recreational facilities “is critical for the safety and gratifying experience” of those using them, especially those who wish to exercise and participate in sports activities at night.
It noted that due to natural disasters, vandalism and lack of maintenance, these recreational facilities “have fallen into various states of disrepair.”
“The Youth Congress highly understands that if these repairs or improvements are not made, such as proper lighting, they may result in physical injury to those who use these facilities, both athlete and spectators alike,” the resolution stated.
“Proper lighting promotes health, wellness, and outdoor activities in the evening, reduces property damage and closure of public facilities due to vandalism, minimizes the hazards of personal injury and loss of life, and maintains the quality of outdoor cultural, recreational and other community resources,” the resolution added.
“The collaborative efforts of DPW, DPL and CUC is necessary to assess and mitigate the lack of proper lighting in the recreational facilities in the villages.”
