TRIPLE J on Tuesday announced that former Assistant Attorney General Jose Mafnas Jr. is its new corporate counsel.
“I am grateful to be a new member of Triple J’s team as it continues to bring exciting developments to communities throughout the Pacific,” Mafnas said in an email to Variety.
According to Triple J, Mafnas will “provide valuable counseling in planning and decision making and handle all legal responsibilities for the Triple J group of companies.”
He will play “a key role on Triple J’s executive team, providing legal protection and services both to individual employees and the group, from legal research, insight on contracts, property laws, to government regulations and more.”
“Jose has strong experience both as assistant AG for the CNMI and as an associate attorney engaging in legal matters that pertain to the industries within which our group of companies operate,” said Jeff Jones, president, Triple J Enterprises Inc.
“He will be a key addition to our executive management team as we continue to deliver on our growth strategy as a group,” Jones added.
Mafnas succeeds attorney Jim Stump who returned to his home state, Michigan, last month after eight years as Triple J’s corporate counsel.
Stump is also a former CNMI assistant AG and served as legal counsel to the governor in the Fitial and Inos administrations.
For his part, Mafnas was previously a CNMI assistant AG assigned to the Civil Litigation Division and represented the CNMI government and the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation.
Mafnas previously worked for a private law firm on Saipan. His legal work included real estate transactions, appellate work, civil litigation, probate, and general legal assistance.
His legal experience includes research work and internships with the Guam Supreme Court, Professor Rose Cuison-Villazor at the UC Davis School of Law, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and the District Courts on Guam and Saipan.
He is licensed to practice law in the CNMI, Guam, and California.
Mafnas has a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in Criminal Justice and Criminology from Chaminade University of Honolulu and is a graduate of the University of California, Davis School of Law.
