THE Senate and the leaderships of Rota and Tinian will host decentralization mini summits this month.
Senate President Jude U. Hofschneider invited Gov. Ralph DLG Torres to the summits on Tinian, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. in the Tinian Western Lodge conference room; and on Rota on Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m., in the Rota mayor’s conference hall.
The idea of holding the summits was first mentioned during a presentation on Tinian on Oct. 21, Hofschneider said in a letter to the governor.
The presentation discussed an “economic vision” for the Commonwealth and the potential concerns that investors may face in the CNMI, particularly on Rota and Tinian.
Hofschneider said there may be a need to “decentralize certain functions of the government to allow the municipalities the opportunity to seamlessly carry out their day to day operations.”
He added, “It is for this reason that the Senate strongly supports this proposed initiative to continue the discussion of granting authorization to decentralize certain services to the municipal governments of Rota and Tinian.”
Hofschneider said as part of a collaborative effort, the governor’s participation “is respectfully requested in the upcoming Decentralization Mini Summits on Rota and Tinian, respectively.”
Hofschneider also requested the attendance of Department of Finance Secretary David DLG Atalig and the department’s division directors.
“On behalf of the Senate, we look forward to meeting with you and the Rota and Tinian leadership in a unified effort to protect the economic interests of the Commonwealth,” Hofschneider told the governor.
