Filipino group conducts fundraising drive for Philippine typhoon victims

THE United Filipino Organization conducted a roadside fundraising drive at the San Jose/Oleai traffic intersection on Friday, Dec. 24, for the victims of Super Typhoon Rai in the central Philippines.

Known in the Philippines as Odette, the super typhoon affected one million people, killing at least 400 and causing severe and widespread damage amounting to over $780 million.

UFO president Marcelo “Mar” Masilungan said he and other volunteers collected over $2,000 during their fundraising drive.

“We are very grateful to members of the local community for their generosity,” he said. “The money collected will be immediately sent to those affected by the devastation.”

Masilungan said they are also expecting additional donations from the local business community.

“All additional donations will be sent to the victims as soon as possible,” he added.

Masilungan likewise thanked the volunteers who participated in the roadside fundraising drive on Friday.

As for UFO’s annual Christmas event, “Paskong Pinoy,” he said it has to be canceled due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the community.
