Tailoring protection for the Marianas

RECENTLY voted the Best Insurance Company in the CNMI, Moylan’s Insurance-Saipan has been a leader in financial security in the Marianas since 1979. As part of a family-run business established in Guam in 1971, the Saipan branch has grown to serve hundreds of individuals and businesses across the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

Catherine Sablan Tenorio, Branch Manager of Moylan’s Insurance-Saipan, shared insights into the company’s approach to serving the unique needs of the Marianas community. “Insurance is a different animal,” Tenorio said. “We do try to suit the needs of each individual client, while at the same time trying to adhere to the rules and regulations that govern the insurance industry.”

Balancing act

This balance between customization and compliance is central to Moylan’s operations. Tenorio, who has been at the helm of the company’s Saipan operations since 2010, explains it thus: When it is warranted, Moylan’s can tailor the insurance proposals as best it can to meet the client’s requirements.

“Again, when it is warranted [and] justified, all the while maintaining compliance—an important factor that protects both the intentions of the company and, more importantly, the insurable interests of our valued clientele,” she said.

Product offerings

Moylan’s offers a comprehensive range of insurance products, including auto, home, business, and workers’ compensation. Besides advertising its products, Moylan’s from time to time offer promotions and product giveaways—”our way of sharing and giving back to the community.” The company also maintains a website managed by their Guam headquarters, showcasing their various insurance lines and specialized departments.

The company’s diverse portfolio contributes in large part to the economic stability of the CNMI. Tenorio points to their travel insurance and student accident insurance as examples of how they cater to specific community needs.

Customer service

Tenorio emphasizes the importance of the role their underwriters play in educating clients about insurance requirements. “When a client walks in inquiring about, let’s say, auto insurance, the underwriter can provide a detailed explanation justifying the need for such insurance, to include its compliance with CNMI Public Law 11-55.”

Moylan’s commitment to customer service is particularly evident in its Claims Department. As Tenorio puts it, “In the insurance world, there is a saying, ‘The Claims Department is the show window of every insurance company.'” This philosophy extends to all client interactions, with underwriters taking extra time to explain coverage details thoroughly.

Adaptation

Adapting to changing community needs, especially in light of natural disasters, is a key focus for Moylan’s. Tenorio said events such as natural catastrophes play a vital role in how the company executes its underwriting protocols. “Risks are evaluated from the onset, and then re-assessed on a regular basis—yearly, at that—in order for us to stay on top of those risks and exposures that we are undertaking to insure.”

The company’s evolution over the years reflects its commitment to meeting changing community needs. “We make it a point to stay on top of reviewing our books of business, catering to the changing times, and making sure that our clients are properly and adequately insured, so that we provide them the best protection available, all the while going the extra mile to have our clients walk out with a smile of their faces,” Tenorio says.

Bright future

Today, Moylan’s Insurance remains a family-run business, with the sons of original owners Kurt and Judith Moylan at the helm of various departments. Kaleo Moylan directs the Life Department, Troy Moylan leads the Health Department, and Miki Moylan oversees the Property and Casualty Departments for both Moylan’s Insurance Underwriters Inc. and Moylan’s Insurance Underwriters Int’l.

As Moylan’s Insurance-Saipan looks to the future, it remains committed to its founding principles of tailored service, community engagement, and comprehensive protection. With its deep roots in the Marianas and its forward-thinking approach, Moylan’s continues to be a trusted partner in safeguarding the financial well-being of individuals and businesses across the islands.

‘We do try to suit the needs of each individual client, while at the same time trying to adhere to the rules and regulations that govern the insurance industry.’
