More green jobs needed

Careeronestop.org, a Web site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, lists over 200 green careers that fall under 12 different sectors and these include renewable energy generation, transportation, energy efficiency, green construction, energy trading, energy and carbon capture and storage, research, design and consulting services, environment protection, agriculture and forestry, manufacturing, recycling and waste reduction, and governmental and regulatory administration.

Green careers, according to the U.S. DOL’s occupational information network, or O*NET, can be any occupation that is affected by activities such as conserving energy, developing alternative energy, reducing pollution and recycling.

Among the green occupations now in demand are bus drivers who will be needed to fill an increased demand for public transit, agricultural inspectors who will help meet the increased demand for organic and sustainable farming techniques as well as new government regulations, and carpenters and carpenter helpers who will be needed to work on green construction and retrofitting projects.

New green occupations that have emerged because of the global green trend include energy auditors who will conduct audits to determine how energy-efficient buildings and homes are, chief sustainability officers who will oversee the green activities of various organizations, and wind energy engineers who will design and develop wind farm systems. To explore the vast field of green careers, check out www.careeronestop.org and click the ‘explore green careers’ tab in the upper left part of the Web page.
