But not everyone has lost hope. Every now and then, Saipan sees a new building being constructed or a new business opening up.
Two weeks ago, Koi Restaurant & Bar opened along Plumeria Street at the heart of Garapan. The restaurant owner revived the old Torihide Building and transformed it into the newest, classy yet affordable hangout in Garapan.
Its manager K. Tan said they are not discouraged by the gloomy business atmosphere, nor are they threatened by the competition.
“We are not here to compete with others — we are here to give the community something different and a place they can call their second kitchen,” Tan said.
Koi Restaurant & Bar also introduces the Koi Jammers band which performs starting at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The place can accommodate up to a hundred persons, and the restaurant area can be converted into a dance floor where guests can dance the night away.
The restaurant carries a wide selection of wines and beers at pocket-friendly prices.
Koi Restaurant & Bar offers a fusion of Western and Asian cuisine and also serves customized food orders.
This means that if a customer wants to eat something that is not on the menu but the ingredients are available, Koi will cook it.
“We can assure our customers that we serve good food and quality service that is up to par with the standards of the best hotels here,” Tan said.
Visit Koi Restaurant & Bar and try their delectable dishes from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, and from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. for dinner. Happy hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. when there is a 20 percent discount on all items. For more information, call 233- 2564.
