Inkling: Upgrade

Everything is so advanced and everyone, it seems, is expected to catch up with the technological advancement – or risk a rash of criticisms.I feel like a person who walked the plank of Noah’s Ark when it comes to iPods, PS2s, cell phones, and the whole range minute devices, which have become part of nearly every conversation among the youth. It is just mind-boggling.I need to upgrade.

My daughter, who turned 7 this year, overheard my son talking to a friend about upgrading their iPods. She complained later that she has long way to go as far as upgrading is concerned. She said all grownups upgrade whenever they want, but she and her classmates only get one chance to upgrade every year until they grow up – upgrading from 1st grade to 2nd grade and so on.I silently laughed at her perception, but I learned a great from the simplicity of her thoughts.

At the end May this year, nearly all children who are enrolled in schools in Palau, will be upgraded – move from one grade level to the next, provided they fulfilled all the necessary requirements. Some of them would be upgraded from the primary school level to high school. Some of them would be upgraded from high school to post secondary institutions somewhere. Most of them, if they do not drop out, get suspended, or expelled, would most likely be part of the greater technological development upgrade.

For the rest of us, we would be upgraded as a people – our children would be among the literate and within the same grade as the rest of the world.

You and I really need to get a move on before we lose our children in all these upgrading. It may sound wonderful that they are getting ahead, but we are falling behind. They have literally advancing beyond our understanding; and more and more of them are getting old too fast and dying too young.

Do you know of the latest upgrade that your child is involved in?Do you have time for your child to give you an update of his or her life?Do you know what he or she has learned?Does he or she text messages in a language that you can’t understand?Who are his or her friends? How was he or she doing in school prior to his or her upgrading this month?

You and I may never get ahead when it comes to understanding the evolution of technology and its exponential and expensive upgrades nor would we be able to comprehend how our children manage to use the technology, but we will survive. However, we would most certainly be failures if we treat our children like technology. Our children come with lifetime warranties. We cannot afford to miss their upgrades. They are priceless.LOL with your child as he or she upgrades.
