The Inkling

There are still adults – excluding those under the age of 21 because they fall within another realm of our alcohol dilemma; and to include them would mean that I would have to question those who are obligated and paid to implement and enforce established statutes – who drive under the influence of alcohol.  There are many of them.  They are not an exclusive group.  In fact, they are everywhere.

The list of the adults who continue to drive after consuming one-to-many cans of beers, or two shots of hard liquor over the “socially accepted limit”, or a number of glasses of wine that would empty a few bottles is quite long.  Are you on this list?

Last Friday I witnessed a gruesome vehicular accident that could have been avoided – if only one of the drivers had heeded to the campaign ads.  But then again he would have been driven to refuse consumption of alcohol altogether if we, as self-willed people, are as serious about drunk driving as we are about political correctness.

Maybe if we begin to be politically incorrect and culturally deviant, solutions to all of our alcohol related problems would be resolved.

I propose that our lawmakers enact outrageous laws against drunk driving – do not think about how tourism is impacted or those relatives who somehow managed to infect themselves with alcoholism.  Treat drunk driving as one of the cardinal sins that cannot be dealt with lightly.

For most, drunk driving is considered suicidal.  I think it should be considered attempted multiple murders with a deadly weapon.  Would it not be fun and entertaining to read or hear about our courts charging someone for assaulting so and so and so and maybe so with a car, which already has a battery – two if the vehicle runs on diesel fuel – and further, for attempting a mass suicide if he or she had passengers?

People tell me that a day will come when all of these alcohol issues will lose significance and would not matter.  I am sick and tired of waiting for that day.  What of day of the week is it?  Would it be considered the 8th day?

I pray with the rest of the sober people that there is really such a day; and I thank God that it’s not Friday!  Lately it seems that Friday becomes a “fry day” after a pay day – when everyone is on edge after attending to an extended inventory of cultural obligations and then be subjected adverse news of a relative involved in a drunk-driver caused accident.

Do walk into one of our famous “watering holes” and see for yourself.  Nearly everyone drinks alcohol.  The married, the divorced, the single, the poor, the rich, Christians, politicians, and even the under 21 could be found in these places.  Many of them – if not all – would be drinking to quench thirsts and to restrict mental processing.   Afterwards, they adamantly insist that they are capable of driving home unassisted.

Sadly, you and I and a few of the good men and women have long decided to agree with them.  Should continue to do so? Why?
