Over the next few weeks I will try to answer these questions. More questions will crop up as we look at this issue. We will try to look at those too.
The 17th CNMI Legislature has passed a bill that calls for a group to be formed to look at how the Northern Mariana Islands are politically connected to the world and whether that way is the best for you and me and all our citizens. They are to see where we are and how we got here. They are to look at several choices and try to decide whether we have the best possible deal. What we have is not the only choice, but is it the best?
The work this group will do is important and it is in four parts. They are not to begin their work with an answer, but will spend the next several months coming up with suggestions and recommendations that we the citizens will vote on and decide.
The next article will look directly at what the commission is commanded to do by the new law and how long they have to do it.
Until then, I’m Stanley McGinnis Torres and I don’t know all the answers but I have a pretty good idea about what questions we need to ask. Please feel free to contact me by email : [email protected] or you can call me at : 664-8903 if there is an issue you want me to talk about in this series of articles.
