Letter to the Editor: Another perspective

Since Mr. Davis seems bent on promoting his delusions of grandeur, and categorically ranks the people of Guam” at or near the top” in sin and corruption, then I will attempt a short, and hopefully, a useful rebuttal.

Our diverse community certainly has its share of problems. Human beings can be frail and complicated by nature. Institutionally, however, most people have little control over the major economic and political parameters in their society. This certainly is Guam’s case because it was taken during the American imperial times of “manifest destiny.”

The U.S. Navy completely ruled the island until the Organic Act of 1950, which then allowed civilians a voice — however small. For better or for worse, Guam’s development and resources mainly have come from Washington, D.C., and for a long time. Without a doubt, our geographic significance has reinforced its military use since World War II. In my view, our containment “military” policies are long overdue for revision and downsizing.

So, what can a citizen do about it? We could ask for policy changes; we could ask for more representation which implies accepting more responsibility for ourselves? We might even ask Mr. Davis for his assistance?!
