Letter to the Editor: Can’t change history

What you want to call Chamorro isn’t any closer to ancient Chamorro than Latin is to American English.

I believe it is in the charter of the University of Guam to have a Chamorro language and culture study program. If you want to study dead languages when you’re in college, I say have at it.

As abysmal as the public schools are on Guam, the government of Guam should not consider spending millions of dollars wasting students’ time learning a language that can’t be used except to talk to your grandmother or maybe some secret Chamorro Society.

If you want to be part of today’s world you need to learn math and science in the public schools. If you have the resources so that your children don’t ever have to make it on their own, then by all means home school your children in the ancient Chamorro language and culture. But don’t ask the U.S. taxpayer or us non-Chamorros to pay for it.

I’m really sorry, but I can’t change history! Maybe you can dispute it.
