Letter to the Editor: Innocent until proven guilty

The lt. governor has constitutional rights just like every citizen. He is vigorously defending himself against the allegations brought against him in a court of law, with all its safeguards for Mr. Villagomez, as well as the government.

Unless someone changed the Constitution, Lt. Governor Villagomez is presumed innocent of the pending allegations. Until a jury of his peers decides otherwise, he is innocent.

The prospect of Representative Sablan conducting impeachment proceeding while at the same time lt. governor is defending himself in court is ridiculous and violates every fiber of our system of justice. The comparison to Governor Blagojevich is misplaced. The Illinois governor was impeached for misconduct unrelated to his possible criminal charges for attempting to “sell” the former Senate seat of President Obama. Another key distrinction — Governor Blagojevich had not yet been charged in a court of law prior to the impeachment proceedings being held.

Let the judicial process run its course and do not presume an innocent man guilty.
