In order to keep our beaches clean and beautiful and preserve them for the next generation, children and adults need to start being responsible for their actions. Litter is not just ugly to see, it can also result in disasters in nature.
Garbage that is thrown in the ocean can cause animals to become ill. An example of this is when plastic bags sail far out in the ocean and turtles mistake them for jellyfish. Innocent turtles may try to swallow the synthetic products, causing them to choke and die. Another harmful effect of marine pollution occurs when animals are forced to relocate because their natural habitats have been destroyed.
On shore, trash gradually steals the beauty of our island’s coastlines. When garbage is not properly disposed of, animals often scatter them. This can result in health and safety hazards such as broken bottles and sharp cans. It also becomes a magnet for flies and mosquitoes, which spread diseases.
In addition, pollution takes away from the pride of our island. People from around the world come to our island for a glimpse of paradise. If they see that we do not respect our home, they may not respect it either. We have a responsibility to take care of what is our own and show others how to do the same.
Pollution on our beaches is a problem everyone can do something about. Volunteering for beach cleanup, taking care of personal trash when using the beach, encouraging others not to litter, and teaching children to properly dispose of trash are a few simple ways to get started. By being responsible for our actions, we can preserve Saipan’s natural beauty for generations to come.
