Letter to the Editor: The truth behind the NMC fiasco

As for Mr. Sobolewski’s call and demand for the board of regents to resolve grievances raised by  faculty members, staff,  administrators and community members against NMC President Carmen Fernandez — we ask him, what grievances?

Has Mr. Sobolewski submitted any of these grievances ? Has his supervisor, Dr. Debra Cabrera, received any of these complaints?

Although these faculty and staff members might have legitimate concerns or grievances none of them have taken the time to justify their complaints to their immediate supervisor, Dr. Debra Cabrera, in order that their grievances are properly processed and addressed.

Mr. Sobolewski himself admitted on camera that he understood that there was a grievance procedure and that he was not sure if any grievances were filed.

But he did say that one was filed on Monday last week before the board met on Friday. Interesting.

Who does Mr. Sobolewski report to? Who is his immediate supervisor? Dr. Cabrera. If any of them has a legitimate complaint or concern why didn’t Dr. Cabrera report them? It was her duty to find a resolution to this matter for she is their immediate supervisor.

They chose a path through a board member who brought the issues before the board of regents. This overstepped boundaries, policies, guidelines and procedures for hearing complaints or grievances.

Such policies and procedures have been in place for a reason, and common sense should tell you that whatever company, big or small, private, government, autonomous or an institution —there are always  policies in place to addresses issues diplomatically, professionally, maturely and legally  for the protection of both parties.

I am not lawyer but I have enough experience and common sense to understand that you do not go accusing anyone without proof or supporting documents. If you are a soldier, you do not go into a battle field or war zone with an unloaded weapon.

It’s always best when an employee tries to resolve his/her grievance with a supervisor. If not satisfied with the outcome, there is a manager; and if still truly not satisfied then there is the president.

If all efforts have been exhausted to resolve such grievances and the employee is still not satisfied then there is an appeals process through the board. Finally, if still not satisfied with the board’s decision, then it will would best for the aggrieved employee to start looking for another job.

Otherwise you’re just spitting in the wind and hampering positive solutions to serious and critical issues such as the pending show cause action on NMC’s accreditation.

But the damage has been done. Innocent people were dragged in and students were made to sign something they were not aware  of — something that was initiated by certain individuals, faculty and staff.

The board’s position against  the return of Ms. Agnes M. McPhetres to the board was justified and based on the best interest of NMC as she so stated last Friday the 13th before the board.

This is not about who is smarter, more qualified or better experienced at what they do. This is a mission to save NMC.

Dr. Fernandez has put together a special team that is trying to save NMC’s accreditation.

But because of selfish motivations and hidden agendas something went wrong.

This is not about being on Dr. Fernandez’s side but it’s about the whole TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH and the well-being of NMC’s students.

Friday’s petition supporting McPhetres?

Look at the signatures.
