Letter to the Editor: Thoughts of a soon-to-be voter

It has a complete list that includes his spouse, children, parents, parents-in-law, sibling’s spouses, grandparents, and spouse’s grandparents. Whew! What a list! I’m convinced I’m related to him somehow. Also, to top it off, squeezed into the bottom is a one-sentence statement saying that his priorities will “include Public Health, Environment, Retirement, Education, and Tourism.” How very specific. Everyone, this is a perfect, winning political ad.  For a politician in the CNMI, I may add.

However, as a voter I am curious about a few things. To all you candidates who are running: What is your take on local issues? What about national issues? As we all know, there is a list, a mile-long, filled with local issues that include Article 12, federalization, education, and even the governor’s lawsuit. I believe that if I, a 17-year-old public school student,  know about these issues, then so should my representatives. I want a representative who knows just as much, if not more, about local issues than I do. I want a representative who will put a stop to the “jump on the train, or you will be left behind,” legislative nonsense, and who will be an individual, not part of a group mentality or a pawn in the game of NMI politics. I want a representative who will talk issues, not family, and if a candidate can only talk about family and general, safe, issues then they cannot count on my vote.
