Letter to the Editor: To Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you and wish you all the best when you take your oath of office for the second time and when you embark your long journey back to the nation’s capital. And from there on, you will continue to tackle and address those difficult but important issues facing and confronting our commonwealth specially our economy and many other important issues we are faced today.

The proud people of the commonwealth greatly appreciate all the effort and hard work and honorable service on your first term in office and that will always be in the hearts of the many people that again had given you the opportunity to serve your second term in the U.S. Congress at the nation’s capital.

As you embark your long journey back to the nation’s capital, however, there is one agenda I would also like to bring to your attention. A very important viable economic idea that for many years our elected leaders of the past have failed and neglected or over looked at a very potential and viable economic opportunity and I hope our present leaders won’t over look this as well.  That we must act and respond to this very important constructive and productive economic idea and that is, importing of our local agricultural products (crops) into United States.

I think we begin with United States Department of Agriculture.  This is where I believe we should start and open a dialogue and share the idea in mind on what and how can our local products can be processed and meet the requirements to enable to pass USDA approval and be accepted for distribution into the markets in United States.

But first, we must seek for assistance from United States in assisting and in  collaborative effort with our local government with joint partnership effort in the development of our local agricultural products with  modern technology that will greater enhance the growing and the production of our local products along with our local farmers and for those of us who will be interested in growing the variety of crops available on our islands.

Congressman, if we pursue this today, this will be the beginning of our Agricultural industry to promote and open the door of solid opportunity for our people. This will also encourage those interested in farming and exporting their products and for the local farmers who are presently farming can diversify into variety of crops in line with the industry. In general,  these will greatly yield and stir major economic activities and with continuing unemployment in the raise, this will certainly and most importantly create jobs and business opportunities for our people.

This opportunity will also give our local farmers a major and broader aspect of learning and gaining the knowledge and understanding in every perspective of today’s and tomorrow’s competitive market in the agricultural industry and to provide them the essentials in producing quality products.  Thereby, producing maximum quantity and producing  better quality on any product they grow. These economic possibilities will only benefit and bring positive economic results and a positive step towards building a stronger productive and sustainable economy in conjunction  with our tourism industry. And with great pride I might add, the quality product imported into United States or other countries for that matter is from the works and by product of our hard working  productive people and resources that we have.

I sincerely believe that we must start and pursue this viable Agricultural Economic Development Opportunity now and not later. And by doing so today, and with your effort and initial step you take towards this idea, I am positive and optimistic that we will see positive results that will lead us to see the light at the end of the tunnel and will bring us to a brighter economic future for all and for generations to come.

Thank you and I hope that in doing so, and as our first elected U.S congressman and in  your second term for that matter, that this also will reflect a very important step and milestone for our agricultural industry. But this will depend on how you take this matter of economics seriously and how you plan to build a solid economic foundation for the future of  our people and for our beautiful mother land and our commonwealth.

Again, I hope and wish you the best in all that you do for our proud people of the commonwealth and for all in it that you do will be fruitful that will benefit us all today and for all generations.

Thank you and God Bless.

Sincerely,

GEORGE M. FLEMING JR.
