Letter to the Editor: To ICE’s Lori Haley

“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is the largest investigative agency in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Formed in 2003 as part of the federal government’s response to the 9/11 attacks, ICE mission is to protect the security of the American people and homeland by vigilantly enforcing the nation’s Immigration and Customs Laws. The Office of Detention and Removal is the primary enforcement arm within ICE for the identification, apprehension and removal of illegal aliens from the United States. The resources and expertise of DRO are utilized to identify and apprehend illegal aliens, fugitive aliens, and criminal aliens, to manage them while in custody and to enforce order of removal from the United States.”

Mission? DRO promotes public safety and national security by ensuring departure from the United States of all “removable aliens” through the fair and effective enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.

Questions:

1. Does ICE have the funding and the detention facility to carry out its duties in the apprehension and removal of illegal aliens in the CNMI?

2. You mentioned “criminal aliens,” what about the illegal aliens in the CNMI?

3. True or false? Is ICE authorized to work with state and local enforcement agencies?

Last but not least, what is ICE going to do with those overstayers/unemployed illegal aliens in our homeland now being harbored and protected by the federal ombudsman and Department of the Interior as they await an act of Congress to grant them permanent residency or citizenship?
