Letter to the Editor: What makes a good student? What makes a good lawmaker?

They come to school on time, volunteer in all extra curricular activities like Junior Police  or staying after-school to clean up the classrooms. They help in the office whenever they can and they even become messengers on campus.

They will do everything under the sun on campus but they always fail to pass their tests.

Now, are they still good students? No! They may have demonstrated what is morally right, but failing their tests proves they are academically falling behind.

Academic failure is unacceptable and they have to retained at the same grade level until they show improvement. It will be great if my kids can excel academically and simultaneously swim with the flow!

On the other hand, what about our lawmakers? We have one expectation and that is that our lawmakers pass significant bills. What makes a good lawmaker? Is it the one who is a good JPO, always cleans the chamber, runs around as messenger but never can muster enough camaraderie to pass a bill in behalf of the precinct from which he/she has been elected to represent?

The one who always barks but fails to get an approval by showing any sign that a bill has been passed to his/her credit, and being so controversial on all issues, all of the time?

A student has to pass  tests, so lawmakers must pass bills and learn to swim with the flow.

If you can’t pass bills, then you cannot make laws, therefore you don’t have any business being a lawmaker.

Same as students — if you can’t pass tests, you are better off being a farmer. Boy, it will be great to see a former lawmaker wannabe become a productive farmer, if he/she couldn’t be a productive (bill passer) lawmaker. En fin Serafin!
