THE Tinian Public Library is hosting a book signing for our new book, “Seabees and Superforts at War: Tinian’s Critical Role in the Ultimate Defeat of Japan,” on Thursday, April 4, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. I will be there to make books available for only $25, a special for Tinian for this one day only. The same will be true for “Tinian and The Bomb,” for those who do not have one.
I apologize to the people of Tinian for not doing this earlier, as the book was created for them. I had to conduct the veterans tour almost immediately after the books arrived on Saipan.
The book is actually a history of Tinian during World War II, beginning with the Japanese administration. It covers the planning stage (the decision to capture the Mariana Islands), the invasion and capture of Saipan, the capture of Tinian, the story of Camp Chulu, the Seabee reconstruction of Tinian, the Army Air Force B-29 operations, the dropping of the bombs and demobilization.
Hundreds of photos and maps bring the story to life. The reader will be able to see how North Field and West Field were constructed, as well as Broadway and the harbor, including the breakwater construction.
I look forward to seeing you there.
