Movie Review: ‘Kick-Ass’

This movie, however, is not for everyone.  It is definitely a love-or hate film.  If you find yourself angry at the thought of watching an 11-year-old girl — who, by the way, has the mental maturity of someone in her mid-20s — slice and dice criminals with a wide assortment of exotic weapons, then “Kick-Ass” isn’t for you.  The superhero, Hit Girl, really seems like a mature and grown up young woman who just so happens to be in the body of a child.

The premise of the movie is simple.  Dave Lizewski is your typical high school geek.  He is horrible around women, he gets picked on by bullies, and he hangs out in a comic shop with his equally geeky friends after school.  After being robbed by a couple of thugs while watching a bystander turn a blind eye, Dave decides to go on eBay and buy a super hero costume and a pair of batons.  Dave decides almost instantly that his superhero name would be “Kick-Ass.”  Dave’s antics in his silly looking suit soon raises the attention of two superheroes, Big Daddy and Hit Girl, and, unfortunately, New York’s most powerful drug lord.

“Kick-Ass” is both a great comedy and action movie.  Its dialogue is as witty and raunchy compared to movies like “SuperBad” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”  Dave and his friends manage to constantly spew forth one-liner jokes that seem perfectly natural.  The ridiculously fast paced action scenes and graceful choreography caused many in the audience in the theater to shout “I love this movie!” over and over again.  The action scenes are as bloody as Tarantino films, but unlike Tarantino’s trademark dark comedy atmosphere, “Kick-Ass” manages to evoke a sense of lightheartedness.

But remember, “Kick-Ass” is not for the faint of heart.  It is a movie filled with gratuitous amounts of violence.  Its dialogue, at times, can be extremely perverted.  “Kick-Ass” was a film made to cater to the young adult market.  It is a sophisticated satire of violence filled with hilarious dialogue.  However, it is highly controversial.   All the more reason for one to see it.
