Thirst-quenching shakes and chillers

Throughout the four Saturdays of May at the Taste of the Marianas Food & Beer Garden Festival, during special events and huge gatherings such as the Flame Tree Arts Festival, Liberation Day and at the street market every Thursday, kids and adults don’t mind standing in line waiting for their turn to have a taste of these tropical shakes and shaved ice chillers.

During the last day of the Taste of the Marianas on Saturday, the lines remained long and slow-moving at the booths serving shakes and chillers, long after the food booths closed because they ran out of food to sell. Kids, parents, grandparents, and even military members patiently fell in line but came out happy with a glass of pearl shakes, chillers and shaved ice.

A small or large glass of delightful pearl shake at the Sierra Pearl Shake booth can be had for $2 and $4. Choose from three flavors for your delightful crushed ice-based dessert such as blue Hawaii, fruit punch, strawberry, blue raspberry, cherry, banana, orange, lime, and blueberry. The cup cone-shaped glass comes with a small plastic scoop which you can use to enjoy the cool dessert.

Pearl shakes at Sierra’s are available in over 20 flavors. For $3, sip on a small single flavor pearl shake, or add a dollar more and upgrade to a large glass. For $5, you will have a blast sipping on a double flavor large glass of pearl shakes. Among the most popular flavors for pearl shakes are blueberry, watermelon, mango, cherry, frozen coffee, cappuccino, vanilla,  blue Hawaii, buko pandan (coconut and Pandanus amaryllifolius), green team, cookies and cream, and green apple.

You can request for additional toppings of whipped cream and chocolate, caramel or strawberry for more enjoyment.

Tropical Chill in Puerto Rico is another destination for temptingly cool and deliciously pearl shakes in a variety of flavors such as Mocha Java or chocolate and coffee, Chocoholic, berry strawberry, cookies and cream which is a combination of Oreo and vanilla, honey don’t or honeydew, melon mania, what-a-melon.

Take a sip of chillers made from local fruit and products such as the Ube Doobie or taro, Kaduko Nut from coconut, Saipan Saibok or a mix of taro and coconut, Pina Colada, banana split, banana berry, and tango mango.
