A day in the life of an elementary school teacher

Are you ready to switch jobs and become a teacher?  Before you make up your mind, let’s visit Mrs. Vilma Travilla, a veteran first grade teacher at San Antonio Elementary School.

We asked Mrs. Travilla what her day is like and almost ran out of room to write down her schedule!  Here is a typical Tuesday:

4 a.m. — Wake up (It’s hard to get out of bed!); wash a load of clothes and hang them up to dry; cook breakfast for the family; shower and get ready for work.

7 a.m. — Arrive at school for morning supervision.  This means watching over students at the cafeteria from 7 to 7:30 a.m.

7:30 a.m. — Start class with the national anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance,  songs and exercise.  Class continues with reading lessons all the way to 9:45 a.m.

9:45 a.m. — Go to the playground for recess supervision.

10 a.m. — Continue class with lessons in language arts and science until 11:30 a.m.

11:30 a.m. — Walk the students to the cafeteria for lunch and then go back out to the playground for lunch supervision until 12 p.m.

12 p.m. — Continue class with lessons in math, social studies, music and P.E. until 2:30 p.m.

2:30 p.m. — Dismiss the students.  Start cleaning up and sweeping the classroom.  Check all the students’ work for the day and enter their grades into the computer record book.  Start preparing the materials needed for tomorrow’s lessons.

5 p.m. — Leave school and go to church.

7 p.m. — Go home, cook and eat dinner.  Watch over the three grandkids and help them do their homework.  Read bedtime stories.

9 p.m.  — Go to sleep (and don’t forget to set your alarm for 4 a.m.!)
