The association has been actively promoting cross-cultural understanding among Nagaoka citizens, especially for the youth, who are our future leaders, through many exchanges overseas.
This is the 10th year that junior high school students from the region have visited the island. Students have greatly benefited through this exchange in the past years.
All the students are very thrilled about visiting Saipan, especially after they learned much about its culture and history through several orientations they had.
The exchange program began on Nov. 24 and ended on the 28th.
The visitors were 31 junior high school students from Nagaoka City and 11 chaperons.
At Mount Carmel School, the visitors introduced Japanese cultural traditions such as origami and games while participating in the Thanksgiving Mass.
The visiting students also spent one night of homestay at the Mount Carmel students’ homes.
While here, the visitors toured historical sites on island such as the Last Command Post.
They listened to a lecture about the history of World War II and enjoyed Saipan’s beautiful beaches and sea.
They also had a chance to shop.
When not homehosted, the students were accommodated by the Saipan Grand Hotel.
The delegation leader was Tomonobu Haga, director of the Nagaoka City International Center.
Haga has traveled to many countries and teaches his students about Saipan.
He said he really felt in love with Saipan, especially its friendly people.
