That was the experience of Vermon Santos, a student of the Northern Marianas College’s Educational Talent Search, or ETS, who was selected to attend an off-island math and science summer camp in California. Santos, a sophomore at Saipan Southern High School, participated in the Monterey Peninsula College’s Math & Science Upward Bound Program in the summer of 2009.
He had the opportunity to visit colleges in southern California, which included University of California Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of California at Santa Barbara, California State University Long Beach, and many other colleges in the area.
The most important experience for Santos was being able to “live” the college life during the short period that he was there. He stayed in dormitories during the six-week long summer camp program and ate dorm cafeteria food, along with actual college students. He was also able to compare the various environments, college programs, and services offered by each university and college that he visited.
“This was truly the experience of a lifetime,” said Santos. “I am extremely thankful for having had the opportunity to attend the summer program.”
During the summer program, Santos was also exposed to classes that offered intensive math and science training. He was afforded the opportunity to interact with faculty who conducted research in math and science and was also allowed to study research procedures under the supervision of faculty members.
“The classes I took were both fun and challenging,” Santos said.
The ETS program was invited to send an active participant to the math and science summer program, which is designed to strengthen math and science skills of participating students primarily in the 10th and 11th grade level in high school. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourage postsecondary degrees in these fields.
