Muslims gathered at the mosques in Fina Sisu and Garapan to commemorate the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God.
About 400 Muslims joined the 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. prayer services to greet each other and bring a message of peace to the community.
Muhammad Rafikul Islam said the annual festival emphasizes that all blessings come from God, and we should open our hearts and share with others.
Jamal Muhammad said the festival is “one way of strengthening our brotherhood not only within the Muslim community but with other people as well.”
Muhammad Awlad Hossain said they offered prayers for world peace.
Hossain said the celebration is also about sharing and helping those who are in need.
In keeping up with tradition, the Muslims slaughtered cows to commemorate and remember Abraham’s trials.
Rabby Syed said portions of the cow’s meat were distributed to less fortunate individuals on island.
“We are part of the community and we want to live in harmony with the local people and so in celebrating this festival, we pray for peace,” he added.
