Betelnut Radio now online

(Betelnut Radio) —  Betelnut Radio, betelnutradio.com, the first online radio station that caters to Chamorro, Carolinian, Hawaiian, Reggae, and Palauan musical styles is proud to announce its launching as of October 2010.

Betelnut Radio was started with a simple premise: To bring local indigenous music and memories to the world.

The idea actually came from a friend posting on Facebook wishing there was a streaming music station for localmusic.

Betelnut Radio was formed by Frank “Kiko” Oliver, PJ Camacho and David DLG. Atalig in August of 2010.  Musical collections were sorted through and playlists were generated based on the listening desires of hundreds of friends and family members throughout the world. Eventually, songs were chosen, servers were purchased, and the airways were filled with the songs of our islands.

The great sounds of Betelnut Radio are delivered via any desktop, laptop or mobile device. We even have an Apple iPhone/itouch app you can download for free and start listening right away as long as you have internet access. In addition, we stream at 64kbps so you do not need a super high-speed connection. For the very first time, a truly “Marianas/Micronesian” themed radio station was created for the people of the islands and the thousands living all over the world.

Initial feedback from the station has proven highly positive.  Betelnut radio is currently averaging 200 hits per day and reached 6,985 since its inception to date.  Users have tuned in from the U.S. mainland, the CNMI, Guam, the Philippines, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, Japan, China, South Korea, Bahrain and many other countries.

More information and advertising opportunities can be received from  David Atalig at david@betelnutradio.com.

Betelnut Radio principles

Frank “Kiko” Oliver moved to the island of Saipan at the age of four. He moved back to the mainland for high school. After high school Kiko moved back to Saipan on his own at 17.  He worked as a music teacher with the public school system at Hopwood Junior High School.  Some years later he worked full time as a DJ with KRSI Hot 98 FM.  Due to the economic hardships of the island, Kiko moved his family (married to a Chamorro girl, Daisy Camacho-Oliver, with two young daughters) to Lake Havasu, Arizona where he currently resides. Kiko, who is 41 now, currently runs his own business producing radio commercials for radio stations across the U.S.

PJ Camacho (Philip Joseph) was born and raised on the island of Saipan after moving to the mainland at age 13 to San Antonio, Texas. He spent a couple years in Texas then moved to Phoenix, Arizona on his sophomore year in High School. PJ was active in many physical sports in high school including football, baseball, wrestling, and track & field.  After graduating high school he moved to Lake Havasu City, Arizona and interned for Maddog Wireless Radio Stations/Murphy Broadcasting for six weeks after getting the Program Director position at age 18.  He spent the last year working for the radio stations in Lake Havasu, recording his music, and playing live shows around town. It wasn’t until a few months ago that Kiko approached him with the idea of Betelnut Radio and asked him to work with the website, music acquisitions, and promotion. Now PJ currently handles the web content of BetelnutRadio while still working with Maddog Wireless radio stations, and his music.

David DLG. Atalig, 40 years of age, was born on the island of Guam and raised on the island of Saipan.  David left Saipan to go to school in San Diego for high school and college.  He graduated from the University of San Diego in 1992 with a BS in Finance and Management.  Shortly after graduating, David moved back home to Saipan where he has worked for mainly in the field of finance in the CNMI government and at Northern Marianas College.  In 2007, David accepted a Fiscal Officer position at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon and relocated his family there.  David is married to Doris Ann Hocog Aldan and has 4 beautiful children.  David came involved with Betelnut Radio when Kiko inquired about his music collection and invite him to handle the Sales and Marketing of Betelnut Radio.  Now, David is in charge of all the sales and advertising of Betelnut Radio while still working with Portland State University.

CRMO to update permit application system

(CRMO) — The CNMI Coastal Resources Management Office has recently received grant funding through a competitive competition entitled “Modernizing and Improving State Coastal Zone Management Information Systems.”

CRMO submitted a project proposal to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in early June and received word of its success last month.

The award will allow for a state-of-the-art permit tracking system that will serve to improve organization within CRMO and between regulatory agencies and the public.

“We are always trying to make the permit process less problematic for our applicants. With the new system, applicants will receive a login name and password and will be able to track the status of their permit throughout the process,” says CRMO Administrator Rita C. Chong.

She anticipates that the system will be online for public use by mid-2011, though a scaled-down version of the system may be available for use as early as Feb. 2011.
