The Tony Award-winning Broadway comedy by Ken Ludwig is directed by Harold Easton and features costumes and set design by students from Kagman High School, Marianas High School and Saipan Southern High School who compete in those design categories in the thespian competitions in the CNMI.
The student designers are Allison Madamba of SSHS, Lara Lleva of KagHS and from MHS: Donna Monton, Haeri Kim, Helen Choi, Rochelle Dimapilis, and Rozette Bunao.
The students submitted their costume sketches and designs in the competitions held in Dec. 2009.
Now, thanks to the support of the local community and businesses, Friends of the Arts can provide the thespians with the valuable practical application of making their designs and plans come to life.
Easton notes, “The students will now be able to follow their designs through to ‘on stage’ completion, which should not only prove very rewarding, but assist them in decisions they make about future design projects. Although the CNMI has had the 2nd and 8th place winners in the national competition in costume design, this will be the first time their designs have reached the stage.”
In commenting on their projects, MHS student Rochelle Dimapilis said, “Designing for a show is a really tedious task but its reward is worth the time spent because of the hard work that I’ve put into the designs. Not only that, but my skills in research and sketching have improved dramatically.”
Rozette Bunao added, “I’m actually proud of myself, as well as cooperating with my friends and people from other schools.”
Donna Morton drew on a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.”
Performing at the Pacific Islands Club, the play will run on the evenings of Feb. 12 to 14 starting at 7 p.m. each night with a special dinner theatre showing on Valentine’s Day.
Tickets are on sale now for $10 student, $12 FOA adult, $15 non-FOA adult and for the dinner theatre show, $60 for FOA-members, $75 non-FOA adult.
Get your tickets today by calling FOA president Dr. Susan Fishman-Tudor at 287-2225, Frank Gibson at 287-7476 or [email protected], other FOA board members, cast members, or by purchasing at PIC front desk.
NMC-PACSS to host seminar for high school seniors
(NMC) — In cooperation with the Public School System, Northern Marianas College will be hosting its second Senior Start Smart Seminar, a workshop geared toward educating high school seniors about college.
The event will be made possible through federal funds provided by the College Access Challenge Project, a grant program under the U.S. Department of Education.
The Start Smart seminar will be comprised of various presentations from PSS, NMC and NMC alumni.
It will be held on Feb. 8-9 at the Saipan World Resort, from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
With the guidance of NMC and PSS staff, students will be given a broad overview of options for grants and various financial assistance programs available at the college.
Hands-on activities will also be a part of the seminar to help enhance exposure on proper ways to filling and completing college applications and financial aid forms.
Aside from personal guidance, current NMC students and alumni will also be sharing personal views and experiences of life on the college level and using NMC as an example.
Presenters will share options of academic programs being offered at NMC.
Academic options include: education, nursing, criminal justice, liberal arts, business, and hospitality management.
“The Start Smart Seminar is an excellent way to provide high school seniors a comfortable forum to learn and ask questions about what college is like and what college life usually entails,” said NMC Dean of Student Services Leo Pangelinan. “We are looking forward to engaging the students and helping them prepare for life after high school.”
The first Senior Start Smart Seminar was held last year in March with students from Marianas High School, Kagman High School and Saipan Southern High School. The Start Smart seminar to be held next month will be comprised of new senior students from the same respective schools.
“We want to ensure that we work vigorously once again with PSS staff for a successful outcome of the upcoming Start Smart session. Most importantly, we would like to reach our goal in educating high school students about their future in college,” said NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.
“We greatly appreciate the assistance and cooperation of PSS staff and faculty in our efforts to facilitate the workshop,” Cabrera added.

DEQ has given these locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
