This is the third in a series of weekly community gatherings where Independent Senate Candidate Christina-Marie “Tina” Sablan will present her platform, answer questions, and listen to concerns.  Next week’s gathering will take place at Pakpak Beach in San Antonio on Oct. 29, at 6 p.m., followed by a similar gathering at Tanapag Beach on Nov. 5.

First vaccine shipment arrives on Guam

HAGÅTÑA  (DPHSS) — The Department of Public Health and Social Services has received the first shipment of the H1N1 FluMist, or the nasal spray vaccine.

According to the recommendations from the Guam Vaccine and Antiviral Planning Committee, first priority will be given to healthcare and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact.

Following this recommendation, DPHSS will be distributing this initial vaccine shipment to the Guam Memorial Hospital and other healthcare providers.

More doses are expected for shipment each week.

“We ask members of the public who want to receive this vaccine to be patient as the DPHSS program expands and more vaccine becomes available. There will be enough vaccine available for anyone who wishes to receive it,” health officials said.

UN Day parade at KoES

(KobES) — Koblerville Elementary School will hold its United Nations Day Parade on Friday, Oct.  23, 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., in Koblerville: As Gonno Rd, Koblerville Rd, Tinala Av, Tinaktak Dr, Fanihi, Tasi Dr, and Saipan Southern High School.

Members of the community are urged to join this “parade of nations.”

NMC completes first phase of facilities master plan project

(NMC) —  Northern Marianas College has completed the initial stage of its facilities master plan project, NMC’s comprehensive plan to develop and expand its campus.

The facilities master plan is the central planning document that the college will use to connect the physical development of the campus to the needs of students, faculty, and staff. When completed, the plan will guide the campus layout, building designs, recreational space, and technological concerns. It will also incorporate.

The plan will also incorporate the latest in sustainable “green” design, which involves resource efficiency, lowered cost of building operations, energy efficiency, and a minimum impact to the environment.

“Students, faculty and staff deserve the best learning and teaching environment,” said NMC President Carmen Fernandez. “The facilities master plan will help ensure that they will receive a state of the art campus with facilities that are equipped with modern technology and that maximize student learning.”

The first phase of the facilities master plan project involved the topographical survey of the As Terlaje campus. This stage involved the recording and assessment of elevation of the land, including existing structures like roads, buildings, trees, depressions, and utilities.

NMI joins climate change action

ON Oct. 24, millions of people around the world, including those from the commonwealth, will come together to urge world leaders to support a clear solution to the climate change crisis: reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, a media release said.

The international day of action, organized by the 350.org campaign, is expected to comprise of more than 3,000 simultaneous events in more than 170 countries.

Organizations and agencies across the CNMI will take part in this event on Saturday at 9 a.m.:

• A gathering on the Mt. Carmel Cathedral lawn for a 350 photo.

Photos from these and similar events around the globe will be broadcast on giant screens at a culminating event in Times Square, New York City at 3:50 p.m. local time and shared in an online slideshow at the 350.org Web site.

Democratic rally

THE Democratic Party of the Northern Mariana Islands will be holding a rally on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the public pavilion on Alageta Road in Kagman II. 

The event will run from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

The entire island community is invited to come and meet and greet the Democratic candidates for the 2009 elections.

Meet the Saipan mayoral candidate Angelo O’Conner Villagomez; Saipan Senate candidate Justo Songao Quitugua; and Precinct 5 candidates Jesse Jones Torres and Willie Brundidge Jr. 

There will be food and drinks available.

Free inspector and compliance workshops

HONOLULU (EPA) — The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam will hold workshops on Guam and the CNMI covering spill prevention and countermeasures requirements, response planning, and other topics relating to facility inspections for hazardous chemical spill prevention.

The free workshops will be held on Nov. 4 at the Hilton Guam Resort and on Nov. 9 at the Hyatt Regency Saipan. The workshops will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proclamation signing

(Saipan Mayor’s Office) — Mayor Juan B. Tudela is inviting  retirees and the general public to a proclamation signing ceremony this Thursday, Oct. 22, 1:30 p.m. at his office in San Antonio. 

The proclamation will designate Oct. 25 to 31 as “National Save For Retirement Week.”
