Lyvonsky Tatebe, Aspesia Rdang, Kornelia Thomas, Radley Uman, Warang Ulechong, Sachi Singeo, Elisha Fakatou, Antja Flowers, Dildanges Sumang, Chelseay Belt, Andrew Ridep, Karl Irvin Baysa and Martin Moore were accepted out of the many high school students in Palau who applied Junior Statesmen Summer Program.
Out of the thirteen students who got accepted, four received full scholarships. Elisha Fakatou, 10th Grader from Emmaus High School; Sachi Singeo, 9th Grader from Mindszenty High School; Radley Umang, 11th Grader from Mindszenty High School and Dildanges Sumang received the Junior Statesmen Summer Program full scholarship.
As for the nine others, Tarita Holm, Junior Statesman Association, Palau Coordinator, will help them raise funds for their tuition fees and air fare.
“We can still do some fund raising,” said Holm. “We still have at least a month to write to government officials for help.” She said the tuition alone costs $4,500. Each student needs at least $6,500 to pay for their tuition, air fare and accommodation. Holm is also helping the students with their itineraries, travel insurance and schedules.
The Junior Statesmen Summer program “offers a challenging, dynamic academic experience for students who have a passion for politics and government.”
The program includes a rigorous curriculum, with an in-depth introduction to U.S. government, U.S. history, politics and public speaking.Classes meet six days a week, and the collegiate environment stresses substantial reading, research and writing.
There is also Interactive Experiential Simulations which includes a hands-on, student-run political experience.Students will have a chance to create and run a legislative body patterned after the U.S. Congress where they will have debates on contemporary political issues – civil liberties, anti-terrorism legislation, education reform and economic policy.
